You Don't Always Need the Original Drawing
Many obsolete components have no available:
CAD model
Engineering drawing
Part number
OEM support
But if you have the physical component, it may be possible to start from there.
The process can involve:
Physical part → measurement or 3D scanning → CAD reconstruction → material identification → manufacturing → inspection
Depending on the part, we may also need to understand features that cannot simply be copied from the outside.
For example:
internal dimensions
bearing fits
threads
sealing surfaces
hardness
surface treatment
wear areas
A 3D scan can provide geometry, but geometry alone does not always tell us how the original part was designed or manufactured.
That is where engineering judgment becomes important.
Copying the Shape Is Not Always Enough
Imagine an impeller from an industrial water pump.
You can reproduce its external geometry.
But important questions remain:
What material was originally used?
Is corrosion resistance important?
What are the critical balancing requirements?
Which surfaces interact with seals?
Does the impeller need heat treatment?
Are the dimensions worn because of years of operation?
The worn part in your hand may not represent the dimensions of the original new part.
The same applies to:
shafts
gears
bushes
levers
brackets
housings
Simply scanning and pressing "manufacture" can reproduce the wear and damage along with the useful geometry.
This Is Where Reverse Engineering Becomes More Than 3D Scanning
A good reverse-engineering project asks:
What was this part supposed to do?
Then:
What failed?
And finally:
How should the replacement be manufactured today?
Sometimes we reproduce the original part exactly.
Sometimes we can improve it.
For example:
changing a material because the original repeatedly wears out
improving a weak section
modifying a mounting arrangement
changing a thread or connection
improving corrosion resistance
This can be particularly useful when someone is carrying out an experiment, modifying an existing machine, restoring a vintage vehicle, or solving a recurring maintenance problem.
From One Part to a Complete Solution
The replacement does not always need to be manufactured using the same process as the original.
An old cast component needed in a quantity of one or two may be more practical to produce through:
CNC machining
rather than investing in a new casting pattern.
A plastic component may be suitable for:
3D printing for testing
before producing a more permanent version.
A sheet-metal component may need:
laser cutting + bending + welding
rather than a dedicated stamping die.
The best solution depends on:
quantity + geometry + material + application + required accuracy.
